Free Job Application Checklist

R 0.00
Drawing: a woman checks her printed CV with a pen. About to press Send? Check it first. It takes 30 seconds. Check 1 of 35: no [brackets] left behind.
The 30-second check, 4 steps: 1. Search for [ so every bracket is gone. 2. Check the company name. 3. Check your phone number and email address. 4. Name the file well, like Firstname_Surname_CV.docx.

Check these 4 things before you send any application.

Here are some of the checks. The PDF has 35 checks in 3 parts. Pick the part that fits your time.

30 seconds

Part 1 has 4 checks. Here are all 4.

  • Look for any [square brackets] left in your CV and cover letter. They mark example words. Type your own words over them before you send.
  • The company name and job title are right everywhere, also in your cover letter.
  • Your phone number and email address are typed correctly. If one number or letter is wrong, the employer cannot contact you.
  • Your file name has your own name in it, like Lerato_Mokoena_CV. Do not use a name like “CV final FINAL v3”.

Never skip this part. It takes 30 seconds. It finds the mistakes that do the most harm.

2 minutes

Part 2 adds 13 checks. Here are 5.

  • Read the job advert one more time. Do everything it asks, like the file type, the reference number and what to write in the email subject.
  • The closing date has not passed.
  • You have what the advert says you must have, like a qualification or a licence. If not, say so honestly in your cover letter.
  • The short summary at the top of your CV matches this job. Do not use the same summary for every job.
  • Every date is correct. All dates are written the same way, like March 2024.

5 minutes

Part 3 adds 18 checks. Here are 5.

  • Your cover letter starts with the right name, or with “Dear Hiring Manager”. No example words are left there.
  • The first paragraph of your letter names this job and says where you saw the advert.
  • The letter reads as if you wrote it only for this company.
  • Send the file type the advert asks for. If it does not say, send a Word file (a document you can type in; the name ends in .docx).
  • If you send a PDF, save your file as a PDF in Word or Google Docs. Never send a scan or a photo of a printed page.

The PDF has 4 pages, A4 (the normal paper size in South Africa). Every check above comes from the PDF, in simpler words.

Did you change the company name from your last application?

The PDF says this is the most common mistake when you reuse an old application.

No. There is no monthly charge, and you do not need an account.

No. You can use the checklist without them. File 08 is a guide to ATS (computer software some companies use to sort and search CVs). It is in the option called Better words for your CV. File 10 is a tracker (a table where you write down every job you apply for). It is in Track and follow up. Both files are in the complete system.

Does it check my CV for me?

No. You do each check yourself. Nobody can promise that it gets you a reply or a job.
