The one-page rule you have read about is American, and it does not apply here. Two pages is the working standard for most South African applicants.
How long should a CV be in South Africa?
Two pages is the standard length for a South African CV once you have a few years of work behind you. School leavers and recent graduates can usually fit everything on one page. Three pages is acceptable for senior, technical or academic roles where the detail genuinely earns its place. Beyond three pages you are almost always padding.
The single-page rule comes from the American resume, which is a different document with different conventions. South African employers routinely ask for a CV rather than a resume, and a CV is expected to carry more detail: qualifications, NQF levels, references, and often a fuller employment history.
What length suits your situation
| Where you are | Sensible length |
|---|---|
| Still at school, or matric just finished | 1 page. You do not have two pages of evidence yet, and stretching it shows. |
| Recent graduate, or first job | 1 to 2 pages. Include internships, part-time work, and any project you can describe concretely. |
| Two to ten years of experience | 2 pages. This is the bulk of applicants and the bulk of adverts. |
| Senior, specialist or over ten years | 2 to 3 pages. Older roles get shorter as they get older. |
| Academic or research | Longer is normal, because publications and funding are the evidence. |
Does a longer CV get rejected by the software?
No. Applicant tracking systems do not reject a CV for being three pages instead of two. What causes trouble is structure, not length: sidebars, tables, text boxes and contact details buried in a header can all be read incorrectly or skipped. A clean four-page CV parses better than a two-page one built in two columns.
Length matters to the human, not the parser. A recruiter with 400 applications is scanning for evidence that you can do the job. Three pages of evidence beats two pages of padding, and one page of evidence beats both if that is genuinely all you have.
If you want the detail on what actually breaks parsing, we wrote it up separately in ATS CVs in South Africa: what actually matters.
What to cut first when you are over
Cut in this order. Each of these buys you space without costing you evidence.
- Your photograph. It carries no searchable text and takes the space of roughly four bullet points.
- Personal details that are not required. Marital status, number of children, religion and full home address are not needed to assess you for a job.
- The objective statement. "Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic organisation" says nothing. Replace it with a professional summary that names what you actually do.
- Duties from jobs older than ten years. Keep the job title, employer and dates. Drop the bullet list.
- Every matric subject, if you hold a higher qualification. A line saying you completed matric is enough once you have a diploma or degree.
- Skills bars and rating graphics. They contain no extractable text, so a parser reads nothing at all from them.
- Reference contact details. Write "references available on request" and keep the list ready. This saves space and protects other people's phone numbers.
What to never cut
- Employment dates. Gaps are far less damaging than missing dates, which read as something being hidden.
- Your contact number and email, as plain text in the body of the document.
- Numbers that show scale. How many people, how much money, how many units, how often.
- The qualification the advert asks for, written the way the advert writes it.
Common questions
Is a one-page CV too short in South Africa?
Not if you are a school leaver or recent graduate. It is too short if you have five years of experience and have simply cut too much, because you are now competing against people who showed their evidence.
Should the references page count towards the length?
Many South African applications ask for references as a separate page, and it is usually not counted as part of the CV itself. Keeping it separate also lets you send the CV without exposing your referees' details to every recruiter.
Does the advert ever specify a length?
Sometimes, and when it does, follow it exactly. An advert that says "maximum two pages" is the only length rule that matters for that application.
Should I shrink the font to fit?
No. Below about 10pt you are making it harder for a person to read, and you have not removed anything. Cut content instead. Going to a third page is better than a page nobody can read.
If you would rather not rebuild it yourself
ATS-friendly CV template for South Africa is sixteen files as a once-off download: two A4 Word CV designs with matching cover letters and reference pages, nine guides, and an application tracker. The current price is on the product page.
All six Word templates were checked at file level and contain zero tables, zero text boxes, zero images, zero multi-column sections and nothing in the header or footer. Page size reads 11906 × 16838 twips, which is A4 exactly.
