How to write a South African CV with no work experience

Every advert asks for experience and you do not have any yet. You are not unusual, and you are not disqualified. What follows is what a South African employer will actually accept in place of a job history.

Is it normal to have no work experience in South Africa?

Yes, and the scale of it is official. Statistics South Africa's Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2026 put the official unemployment rate at 32.7%, with 4.7 million unemployed young people and unemployment among 15 to 24 year olds exceeding 60%. A recruiter in this country opens CVs with no formal job history every single day. It is not the disqualifier you are afraid it is.

That changes how you should write. You are not apologising for a gap in a normal career. You are competing with a very large number of people in exactly your position, and the thing that separates you from them is evidence, not excuses.

What counts as experience when you have never been employed?

Anything where you were responsible for something and someone else could confirm it. Unpaid work counts. A learnership counts. Running the till at a family business counts. What does not count is a list of personal qualities. “Hardworking and dedicated” is a claim about you; “balanced a till to the cent across a six-month holiday job” is evidence, and evidence is what a recruiter can act on.

You have done this Write it as
Helped at a family business A real role with real duties. Name the business, give the dates, describe what you were responsible for.
A learnership or internship A job. Same format as any other role: organisation, dates, what you did, what came of it.
Volunteering, church or community work Under Work Experience if it involved responsibility, not hidden at the bottom under Interests.
A group project or practical at school or college Under Education, with what you actually produced and any number attached to it.
Matric subjects and results Plainly listed. For a school leaver this is your strongest section, so it goes near the top.
Short courses and certificates With the issuing body and the year. An incomplete qualification is listed honestly as in progress.

How do I turn that into a bullet a recruiter will read?

Start with what you did, then attach an honest number. The number does not need to be impressive, and it must not be invented. “An average of” and “approximately” are perfectly acceptable when you cannot verify a figure precisely, and they are far safer than a precise number you could not defend if asked about it in an interview.

  • Weak: Helped out at my uncle's shop.
  • Better: Served an average of 60 customers a day at a family grocery in Mangaung, cashed up at closing and reported shortfalls to the owner.
  • Weak: Good with computers.
  • Better: Built and maintained the stock spreadsheet for a 400-line inventory in Excel, including a weekly reorder list.

Notice that neither of the better versions claims a job title that was never held. Both are checkable. That is the whole standard.

What should the CV look like if the Work Experience section is thin?

Change the order, not the format. Put Education above Work Experience, because for a school leaver or a graduate that is the stronger section. Keep everything else standard: one column, ordinary headings, A4 page size, no photograph, no tables or text boxes. A thin CV that is easy to read beats a padded one that parses badly.

Resist the urge to fill space with a long list of adjectives. A recruiter reading 400 applications is scanning for something specific and checkable. Two pages is normal in South Africa for anyone with a few years behind them; one page is completely sensible for a school leaver or recent graduate, and there is a fuller answer in how long should a CV be in South Africa.

What about gaps between jobs?

State them briefly and move on. A dated line such as “2024 to 2025: job seeking, completed a short course in bookkeeping” closes the question in one line. What draws attention is an unexplained jump in dates, because the reader fills the silence with a worse story than the truth. You do not owe anyone a personal explanation, only a clear timeline.

Does structure still matter if I have no experience?

More, not less. If you have little to say, every line has to survive being read by software and then by a person in a hurry. A sidebar layout or a table can scatter the few facts you do have into the wrong fields, and the recruiter never sees them. The rules are the same for everybody and they are set out in how applicant tracking software reads a South African CV.

Two other pages worth reading while you build this: how to list matric, NQF levels and unfinished studies, and what to leave off your CV, because a first CV is usually carrying several things that are actively working against it.

If you want the wording already written

Two South African sectors of the wording library are free to copy, with professional summaries, skills lists and achievement starters you can adapt. No payment and no email address needed.

If you would rather have the whole thing built, The South African CV & Job-Search System is a once-off download of sixteen files: two A4 Word CV designs with matching cover letters and reference pages, nine guides including one specifically on turning duties into evidence, and an application tracker. The current price is on the product page.

It will not invent experience you do not have, and no template can. What it does is make sure the experience you do have is read correctly and described as evidence rather than as duties.

Unemployment figures are from the Statistics South Africa Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q1 2026, as reported by SAnews and the Department of Employment and Labour in May 2026: an official unemployment rate of 32.7%, 4.7 million unemployed youth, and unemployment among 15 to 24 year olds exceeding 60%.
